early morning around sunrise...

you can see your breath, maybe mid 50's. Most days start in fog for about an hour and and then it cools off pretty fast about 10 pm. The spot where the house is about 1200 ft elevation. The trees help a lot with shade and a light breeze generally comes to visit. This part of the country has a lot of mountains and valleys each one seems to have a little different micro climate. Matagalpa is about 40 KM away, higher, warmer and drier. We get that cloud cover in the morning , it leaves about 1/4 inch of water, keeps us pretty green even in the dry season.

-Doug, wish I was there already

That picture...

on the link 'morning' is from last July, it wasn't bad humidity wise, hit 90 a few times in the afternoons, but we had that little breeze, usually..still nicer to get any work done in the mornings... ;)

Yup

Most of the pines are at about 1370 meters. There are more scattered about at some of the lower elevations in areas I have yet to get to.

Going up the road from the Pan Am. to San Nicolas is pretty interesting. The junction with the Pan Am in Santa Cruz is maybe 800 meters. As you go up the hill you see tropical change to pine and then back to tropical when you drop back down into San Nicolas.

Also, near somoto there are areas where you see cactus and pine growing close to side-by-side. I believe that area is a bit lower--maybe 1000 meters so clearly pine can be grown at lower elevations.

they seem to ..

prefer drier, well drained soils, might be a PH thing too
