Troubadours! (Film Review)Submitted by mjt on 17 May, 2005 - 13:18.
Note: This is a documentary film, not a major motion picture. Troubadours! - A Musical Performance by Groupo Camayoc ; c1987 ; in Spanish & Nahuatl ; 49 minutes ; directed by Julia Lesage. A video recording of the band “Groupo Camayoc”, recorded live in Esteli, Nicaragua in 1986. Traditional Nicaraguan folk-music, performed in the Central American indigenous language Nahuatl (“Camayoc”, in Nahuatl, means “messenger” in English). The group plays their own compositions, some historic songs, and also some compositions by famed musicians Carlos Meija Godoy (Somoto-born Godoy, and his brother Luis, well-known in Salsa and other circles, own the famed Managua nightspot, appropriately named, “La Casa de los Meija Godoy”) and Afro-Cuban legend Pablo Milanes. It is rare to find Nicaraguan music on video, and this film makes a nice introduction. The only serious fault is that it is so short (maybe not even half as long as a concert would normally be), and that many copies of the tape appear to have only mediocre sound quality. |
