Happy American girl on honeymoon in Nicaragua 1946

What can you say except the old cliche that a picture is worth a thousand words...and I am taking a photo of a photo.

Thinking about 1946 vs. today

In my looking to figure out what kind of plane it is I was looking at details. That got me thinking about what has changed in 60 years.

On this plane, and planes I remember when more or less playing in the terminal and on the tarmacs at L.A. International as a kid, the door handle is just that. Just like cars of those eras, you just move then handle to open the door. Today, you have handles, locks on handles, straps, indicators, ...

This "protecting you from yourself and your surroundings" process has been slow but most of it has taken place in my lifetime. It's something I didn't really think about until I moved to Nicaragua. Now, I can walk to the unsafe edge of a cliff if I want, J-walk and not get arrested, ... For me, it mostly feels like a return to personal responsibility.

Related to aircraft, a couple of years ago when I flew from Nicaragua to Mexico through Guatemala City, I even got to use a stainless steel knife and fork to eat my meal. As the flight wasn't going to the US, the airline didn't need to protect us from outselves, I guess.

Here's a link to an article

Here's a link to an article in spanish from "El Esteliano" Magazine that talks about the Taca flights from El Salvador to Nicaragua during the 1930's and briefly metions the history of 3 airfields that have been built in Esteli. It says that "from 1930-34 Esteli played the role of alternate airport, if it could be called that, because TACA of El Salvador established the service to carry passengers with a El Salvador-Tegucigalpa-Danli-Ocotal-Esteli-Managua route. Don Hilario Montenegro Arcia was Agent TACA in Esteli at that time, some estelianos at that time traveled to different places . . ."

Pretty good for 1930's Esteli.

EDIT

I actually wanted to add some of the names of the people who flew with TACA because they were well known in Esteli at that time: "some estelianos at that time traveled to different places . . .from Estelí a Managua: Don Hilario Montenegro, Doña Virginita Montenegro, Doña Isabel V. de Rodríguez, Don Henry Kloth, Doña María Celina de Kloth, Doña Ernestina Zapata, Federico Torres Molina."

Apparently, Hilario Montenegro was the person that the old theater, Teatro Montenegro (destroyed by the war), was named after. Henry Kloth must have been an early American expat or Nicaraguan of American/German background.

Lastly, La Thomson, which today is a landmark or place 3 miles north of Esteli is where the 2nd airstrip was built and used by a company named "THONSSON CORWELL," to help build a stretch of the panamerican highway.

Good find

This photo which includes to door makes it a sure match.

Make of Airplane??

And can anyone identify what type (make) of aircraft??

My guess

Based on what Wikipedia lists as options, I would guess a Lockheed L-18 Lodestar. Hard to be sure with so little of the plane in the photo and no photo of the door of the L-18 but, if the door is at the rear, it looks like an almost sure match.

Thanks!

Thanks, fyl,

Wikipedia's blocked again here in China, but I found a lot of other interesting pictures of the L-18 such as at http://www.airliners.net/search/photo.search?aircraft_genericsearch=Lock...
