Message was written Novermber 15, 1904

My mistake on the date-I had intended to post another card.

Prior to March 1st, 1907 it was illegal to write any message on the address side of the card. Hence the common terms divided or undivided back. So when you see a card with writing on the picture you can be pretty sure that it was mailed before March 1st, 1907.

I have found many scenes in person present day and try to take shot from same view. Mountains and volcanoes change little so finding this street would be very easy.

Strange - two dates?

Ah yes, I see the 15/11.04 date now in the upper right, but isn't that another date in the middle of the left side. I can't read it well on my monitor, but it looks like 1/1 1905(?) The date in the upper right appears to be of a different ink?

I'd be glad to

translate the wahole text. It just is illegible on the monitor. When I zoom in it is unreadable even with enhancement software. Send me a high definition copy and I'll try again.

Thanks for the offer of assistance!

Thanks for your offer to help translate the written script. Maybe it's only the usual "wish you were here" etc. but maybe also an interesting comment by a recent Einwanderer (immigrant).

For those not familiar with German, the following Web site will show you how difficult it is to read German handwriting from that time period (scroll down): http://www.diaware.de/html/schrift.html

Although the printed Fraktur (Gothic) and Sütterlin-(Deutsche)-Screibschrift are often associated with the Nazis, it was the Nazis who banned both in 1941.

From a German Settler?

Written by one of Matagalpa's German settlers??

Why 1912?? The date looks like 1/1 1905 or 1915 but the the day looks like Monday which would indeed be the first day of January in 1915!

I can make out the greeting: "Mein lieber Georg" ("My dear George") and the closing "herzliche Grüsse" (heartfelt greetings"), but unfortunately I can't read the old-style script (deutsche Schrift) Maybe one of the native Germans on this board can decipher the script.

It would be interesting to have a picture taken today from the same location.
