Thomas Belt Zoo, Juigalpa

This zoo, one of two in the country, doesn´t get much publicity. I can see why: it´s something along the lines of a national discrace that only well meaning foreigners can cop a ¨doing the best they with what they´ve got¨ argument. Sad need for both money AND vision.

Caiman display was the only one that looks good in fotos. Good news is that they are working on a big new first class Swan pond at the entrance. A first step to get public support and local pride, I hope.

Come early in the morning for feeding time, when the animals perk up a little. The ¨check guns at ticket booth¨ sign, stray dogs, and buzzards sitting on top of the cages give this zoo an ambiance like none other I´ve ever seen.

I thought the ¨don´t give the chimp cigarrettes¨ sign was kinda funny till I saw some kids feeding cigs to the geese. The guard burns a lot of shoe leather, but he can´t be everywhere at once.

Needles to say, I´m making these comments in hopes that there are some out there in Nicaliving land who might have the means and will to help this zoo out. I´m not talking just about money, they need volunteers, etc. A 4 inch mission statement on the almost bare bulletin board says they want to be an educational, conservation, and tourist attraction.

They look funny smoking too!

Yes you are right on, but here is the problem with zoo`s in Nicaragua, we have so many wild animals around us, in towns, cities, homes, roofs, garages, in some case bedrooms , that there is NO NEED to go to the zoo...

The other day I was at a friends house and was sitting on the porch of his rural home and a horse came walking thru the front door looking to head to the front yard for some grazing. Did a double take but I knew it was not the FDC doing that to me....

My friend turned to me and said, like to ride them? like it was his pet dog swagging his tail at us.

el problema is that no one is letting foreigners of the zoo

The problem is that no one is letting foreigners know about this zoo. I left Nicaragua in 83. Therefore, I'm a foreigner. I had no idea that zoo existed.

One other sad thing

about this zoo is that the size and the sidewalks to nowhere imply that it was once a biiger zoo of national importance.

And yes, more foreign tourists would help bring in money to the town which would help justify more money for the zoo. The foreigners would also have greater expectations for a zoo. This one is stuck at the ¨¨animals on display¨¨ mode whereas most modern zoos have moved on to emphasizing education, research, captive breeding of endangered species, and public involvement. Hope for the future though.

I´m heading for Masaya today and one goal is to see that zoo (on Carr Masaya about hald way from Managua). The only other zoo i´ve stumbled into is the little one at Parque de Los Monos in Matagalpa. Hope it didn´t get creamed in the recent rains as there was flood damage in Matagalpa.

Nature tourism could be a great aid to Nic. and good zoos should be a part of the picture. ¨¨patas de perro¨¨
