Disaster Aid -Puerto CabezasSubmitted by mbonderer on 8 September, 2007 - 07:54.
Salvadoran NGO looking for info on delivering aid to Puerto Cabezas. My map shows a road to the coast. Is it open? I need all the logistical information I can get from you good folks. Talked to the people at the Nicaraguan Embassy in El Salvador and they were trying to get organized and really couldn't help other than send money. ( categories: )

Disaster Aid-Puerto Cabezas
I get nervous when disasters hit. There are a lot of good NGO'S. But for immediate relief I recomend people who are already there with a strong track record. Boots on the ground plus capacity. There are two or three major church's there. The Moravian Church. The Catholic Church and the Seventh Day Adventist's. That pretty much covers it for immediate relief. These folks need water, black plastic ,nails, food, clothes, medicine and they need it yesterday. So always earmark your donations.Give generously The smaller NGO's are more effective in long term recovery, bringing in volunteer teams to rebuild schools, clinics and houses. That's my experience in the last seven years I been doing this The Catholic Church www.crs.org The Moravian Church www.moravian.org Seventh Day Adventist www.adventist.org They have all been there for a long time.
Peace and Blessings
NGOs and Churches
The churches mentioned have a longstanding presence in the R.A.A.N. sector. They do have folks in the ground, and a certain level of infrastructure in place. They are very limited in their abilities to respond without outside assistance. They ARE NOT disaster relief speicalists. Smaller NGOs cannot be so easliy classified as only good for long term projects and assistance. This is a very uninformed perspective. It does take a coordinated effort, with those in the communities, and those from outside willing to help. Just remember, when giving to local churches, they are subject to local politics, and the pressures of a very sumpressed economy. There is not always transparency in where donations go, and accountability. Give generously, but also cautiously. We have a very long track record in this region, and all of Nicaragua. Contact me anytime, if you have questions about helping Felix relief. Doug Partello nicachildfund@juno.com

Road to Puerto and Donations
As of Sept. 9th, the road to Puerto is not passable. The cable to the barge at WaWaBoom is broken. Trucks are stuck on the road. Donations can be made to the Nicaraguan Children's Fund 850 Aspen Circle Oxnard, CA 93030 in Managua contact Hanks Gaitan, 640-9617 to make donations. We have a warehouse in Puerto. We are working on getting humanitarian aid sent. We have a wish list from the Poli Clinic in Pto. Zinc for roofs, nails, and plastic are needed for homes affected. They do not have any good drinking water there, no electricity, and no Internet. Cell phones are working. We have a medical/dental team arriving next month, and a shipment late this month, hopefully. When the roads are passable, we will send 40 ft. containers, depending upon the donations for transport.
You are not familar with this...
situation to know that your efforts have to come by air or from Miami via Miami River via marine shipments I asked whomever to call me. I worked this out during mitch and this is a repeat of the same things. Roads are out of the question, until MAYBE next week when the cable will or is planned on being fixed.

DONATIONS
For those of us in USA what is the best way to donate via web, and by best I mean making sure that it gets to the affected.
We are a volunteer
We are a volunteer humanitarian organization that has been working in Puerto Cabezas since 1993. We have a warehouse in Puerto for humanitarian aid. We have already coordinated with the Poli Clinic to deliver medicines, army cots, and other relief items. We will be working with a number of NGOs to bring shipments into Managua. When the roads are passable, then on to Puerto. We are a legitimate 501(c)3 California nonprofit. Donations can be made to: Nicaraguan Children's Fund 850 Aspen Circle Oxnard, CA 93030 We work with Direct Relief International, Operations USA, MAP International, Wheels For Humanity, American-Nicaraguan Foundation, and many other organizations. Please contact me with any questions. The main need now is funds for transporting to Puerto, getting water treatment, construction supplies for roofs, basic medicines, and dry food goods. Thank you for helping the costenas. Douglas D. Partello Executive Director Nicaraguan Children's Fund
donations
In my opinion for immediate relief Catholic Relief Services-Nicaragua earmarked Felix. www.crs.org
Donations
Thanks, I'll check it out, suggest others do the same.

They were five blocks from World Relief
They did a lot of good but the difference was that we shipped donations already tags to ALL the churches and I think they only catered to Catholic churches. In a case like this, I think one cannot choose whom to help, it needs to be universal. Today in the news I chuckeled at hearing a brown nosed news guy say to the folks in Sandy Bay RAAS , ¨"Fear not people Presidant Ortegas relief is coming to you" as a PALLET OF SUPPLIES marked USAID on it is offloading from a U.S. chopper....this is getting ugly

Road to Port
Last saturday I talked to a group who had just traveled the road, it was in good shape (for that road) over 18hrs to MGA on a bus. The rain in the area have likely worsened road conditions. Arrive by water or air if possible or risk being stuck. On the positive side traffic on the road is likely heavy (aid From MGA) so at least you will not get stranded.
Help in RAAN
Please ask them to call me, (505) 268-2874 or 825-8505 I called the US Embassy here in Managua, a Donald Bassam (Consulate for the Embassy) 2666010 ex 4345, a Laura Harris answers and I left a message. I have experience in that area for over 20 years. I helped the Miskito divers to use dive charts and donated their first re-compression chamber delivered to Puerto Cabezas. I handeled Logistics for an NGO from Chicago called World Relief that set up in Miami, FL. back during Hurricane Mitch.
Short answer to your question is travel by water. forget the roads!

Roads to Puerto
Jorge is right. The roads are not passable. There are many trucks stuck on the road currently. Perhaps in 2-3 weeks they will be in good enough shape to pass. Give yourself a week or more, with delays along the way.
