Ok, Walla Walla Union Bulletin scoops the tri-cycle Herald. Much more details.

DAYTON - A Columbia County Sheriff's deputy is already in Texas, ready to transport Stanley Melvin Long, 56, to Dayton, where he will face 58 charges related to alleged criminal sexual conduct with young girls in Dayton and the surrounding area.

Long was arrested Thursday when he crossed into Nicaragua from Costa Rica where he had been hiding for two years, authorities said.

Tri-Cycle Herald Article

Locals in the Dayton area call him "Space Farmer". The Tri-Cycle Herald had a better write up than the U-B.

DAYTON -- Two years after fleeing the country, a Dayton man is expected to return to Columbia County today to face allegations he sexually abused several local girls.

Stanley Melvin Long, 56, has been charged in Columbia County Superior Court with 58 crimes, including child rape, child molestation, giving alcohol and marijuana to minors, witness tampering and intimidation, stalking and dealing in child pornography, according to court documents.

Long was found in Central America by FBI agents and arrested Thursday in Nicaragua with the help of Interpol and Nicaraguan authorities while crossing the border from Costa Rica, according to an FBI news release.

He was deported to Texas on Sunday and taken to the Harris County jail on suspicion of the federal crime of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

The Columbia County charges stem from a two-year investigation into allegations that Long coerced seven girls between the ages of 12 and 16 into performing various sex acts or posing for explicit photos in exchange for money, alcohol and marijuana between 2002 and 2003.

The crimes were listed in a June 30, 2005, statement signed by Capt. Mark Franklin of the Columbia County Sheriff's Office and contained in a request by then-Prosecutor Colleen Fenn seeking a warrant for Long's arrest.

The girls allegedly were told the only way they could get the marijuana or alcohol was to agree to Long's demands for sex or strip teases. One girl claimed Long gave her alcohol when she was 12 and raped her in his home when she became incapacitated, according to court documents.

Long also is accused in court documents of taking pictures of some of the girls in sexual positions or with their breasts or genitals exposed.

Additional charges accuse Long of harassing one girl's boyfriend and threatening that the couple's child would be taken away by Child Protective Services if she continued to talk about Long having sex with underage girls.

Charges were filed July 1, 2005, but Long fled the country in May 2005, according to Franklin's statement.

Long is believed to have fled to Vancouver, British Columbia, then to Miami before stopping in San Jose, Costa Rica, according to the FBI.

The FBI was notified earlier this year and obtained a federal arrest warrant charging Long with unlawful flight. Interpol issued a Red Notice, an alert that seeks the arrest of someone wanted for prosecution.

Prosecutor Rea Culwell asked the court Monday to set Long's bail at $1 million when he returns.

US Press Article

The Tricycle Herald (Tri-City Herald but that's what people who live there call it) reports about the arrest. Not much info--they say they will have the full story in today's paper.

Nice to hear that the USA

Nice to hear that the USA put a BOLO out on this guy and the immigration at Penas Blancas caught him through INTERPOL. My first thought was, "hope this guy can get a fair trial in Nica." Now that I have read the article, I can say, "Well done, Nica Immigration."

USA or Nica?

My Spanish isn't that great but when I read the article it sounded like the charges were for crimes committed in the US and not Nicaragua. Did I read it wrong or was the guy possibly doing a VISA run from CR and got caught at the border for outstanding warrants issued by the US authorities?

Yes... USA and Nicaragua

Yes... USA and Nicaragua working together.

Pedophilia

While not pertaining to this arrest in particular. any Canadian involved in pedophilliatic activities in a foreign nation, whether arrested there or not, is subject to arrest under the Criminal Act in Canada, upon presentation of credible evidence warranting arrest, and charged accordingly, and if convicted, imprisoned, and upon ultimate release, his name is published in the town's newspaper, the town in which he(she) will reside. The same applies to men being sexually intimate with girls under the age of consent.

We will see more of him in the news

This guy was in Nicaragua last year. He showed up at a school in the south and wanted to “volunteer” his time. He told the person who runs the school (privately funded from the USA) that he was told by another American that they were looking of volunteers.

She had a bad feeling and kicked him out. He hung around the town for a few days and left.

I think we will be hearing more about this guy in the coming months.
