Juanno's blog

Warmed my heart this story did.

A Nicaraguan and a Scotsman, bound by love affairs, decided to venture into the commercial side. The scenario: Estelí. The result: La Casita.

It also made me wish to visit one day.

Immigration Fears kept Nicas in CR

Fears of a US$ 100 fine per month of expired work visa kept many Nicaraguans from their families this Easter. Many border businesses (buses, taxis and restaurants) reported that business was slow and immigration confirmed that the numbers (only 15,000 this year) are about half of what they were last year. As well as the fine, workers whose cedula has expired for more than 3 months could face a cancellation of their status. Apparently, many workers are using the money they would have spent on vacation to legalize their status.

WalMart name coming to Nicaragua?

Walmart continues to make big investments in Nicaragua and this year they plan on another US $30 million of new locations.

Walmart currently has a presence in Central America through four formats: Palí, La Unión, Maxi Palí, and Super Center (the latter has not yet come to Nicaragua).

They expect that the number of local SME's (small and medium sized enterprises) that supply them with products will increase from 41 to 80 and will come mainly from the agriculture and prepared food sectors.

Some new land grab incidents have come to a head this last week or so.

No pattern, just a few good examples of ways you can lose it.

Don Juan cacao liquor

http://www.laprensa.com.ni/2013/02/15/reportajes-especiales/134680-don-j...

Nice story of an unusual business

"Making handmade cacao liquor is a tradition I inherited from my grandparents" said Don Julio.

Finca El Vergel is located at kilometer 114 of the Panamerican Highway South, in Rivas.

Cacao liquor is a maceration process which combines alcohol, water and sugar and takes 25 days but like sugar cane rum, cacao liquor does not expire and the older the better.

Two New Ministries

Assembly approves creation of two new ministries.

With 65 votes in favor, 20 against and one abstention, the Parliament of Nicaragua decided to create the Ministry of Women and the Youth Ministry, at the request of the Executive.

Nicaragua currently has six million inhabitants. Of this, 50.7% are women and 73% of the total population is under 30, according to the National Institute of Information and Development.

The doubts of the deputies who voted against revolved around whether Nicaragua needs these ministries.

Supreme Court Nullifies Registration of Illegally Registered Border Property

The court has ordered registries to refrain from registering property in the name of foreigners in border areas.

The order was issued after an audit at the offices of property registration in the country, in which the Supreme Court found violations of the Border Law passed in 2010.

"There is a law of borders which is less than five kilometres from the borders cannot be acquired (by foreigners), however, this has happened" said the head of the Supreme Court, Alba Luz Ramos.

Managua - Taxi Meters.

It's unofficial but four of the taxi federations are in talks with Managua City Council to begin a pilot program to each introduce 250 meters (1,000 in total) to their fleet of taxis in the nation's capital starting in the second quarter of the year. Meters will be calibrated to account for fuel, time and mileage and on a sample trip, it was 15 Córdobas more than they would have charged normally.

Gas Natural sells shares in Disnorte Dissur...Maybe

Gas Natural say they are still negotiating but the Adviser for Economic Affairs to the Presidency, Bayardo Arce, says they sold its entire shares.

TSK are rumored to be the buyer (http://www.tsk.es/).

Arce said whoever bought the shares should "look how to give a better quality of service to the people"...

The state retains 16% of its equity interest in Disnorte Dissur.

Without wishing to contradict Arce, a Union Fenosa source would only say that "there is a negotiation process, but they have not sold the shares and not reached an agreement".
